What’s Your Blood Type, and Why Does it Matter?
Your Rh factor determines whether you are Rh-positive or Rh-negative. But your blood type also plays a significant role in your overall health.
The Different Blood Types
The four main blood types are A, B, AB, and O. Each of these can either be Rh-positive or Rh-negative. For instance, you could be A+ or A-.
Rh-Positive Blood Type
If your red blood cells carry the Rh protein, you’re Rh-positive. This allows you to receive blood from both Rh-positive and Rh-negative donors.
Rh-Negative Blood Type
If your red blood cells lack the Rh protein, you’re Rh-negative. In this case, you can only receive blood from Rh-negative donors. Receiving Rh-positive blood can cause an immune reaction.
Understanding your Rh factor and blood type is essential for safe transfusions and pregnancy care. Knowledge is power—stay informed to stay healthy!
