What is Staphylococcus and How Can It Affect You?

What is Staphylococcus? Staphylococcus is a type of bacteria found on our skin and in our noses. While many strains are harmless, some can cause infections if they enter wounds or if your immune system is weakened.

Types of Staph Infections:

1. Skin Infections: These are common and can include boils, impetigo, and cellulitis. They often start as small bumps or red areas that can become swollen or filled with pus.
2. Food Poisoning: Certain staph bacteria can produce toxins causing nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
3. Serious Infections: Staph can sometimes lead to more severe infections like pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or bone infections.

Symptoms to Watch For:

• For Skin Infections: Look for redness, warmth, and swelling around a sore or wound.
• For Food Poisoning: Watch for stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting within hours of eating contaminated food.
