What Causes It?
Pregnancy brings many changes to your body, and one of them is swelling or edema. But what exactly causes this swelling?
Your blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy to support both you and your baby, which can lead to swelling in various parts of your body. To cushion and protect your baby, your body retains more fluids, often accumulating in your legs, feet, and hands.
Pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, can cause your blood vessels to relax and expand, leading to fluid leakage and swelling. As your baby grows, the pressure from the expanding uterus can slow down blood flow, contributing to swelling in your lower body.
Increased weight from your growing baby can also affect circulation, causing fluid buildup in your extremities. Additionally, a diet high in sodium can make your body retain more fluid, leading to increased swelling.
Swelling is a common part of pregnancy, but if you notice sudden or severe swelling, particularly in your face or hands, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance and ensure everything is progressing well.
