What Is Fundal Massage?
Fundal massage is a standard procedure performed after the placenta is delivered.
During this procedure, your nurse or provider will press downward and inward on your abdomen to firmly rub the uterus. One hand massages the uterus, while the other supports its bottom near the pubic bone.
Why Is Fundal Massage Done after Childbirth?
The primary purpose of a fundal massage is to help the uterus contract and prevent postpartum hemorrhage. After the placenta is delivered, the site where it was attached to the uterine wall can bleed. Natural uterine contractions help expel this blood and apply pressure to the blood vessels to stop the bleeding. Whether you have a vaginal or C-section delivery, your healthcare team will perform fundal massages to ensure your uterus continues to contract.
Fundal massages are performed several times in the hours after childbirth and may continue in the days following. After delivery, the uterus should feel firm like a softball and be at or just below your belly button. If it’s not firm, fundal massage can help it harden by expelling any blood or clots.
How Does Fundal Massage Feel?
Fundal massage isn’t a soothing experience and can vary in intensity for each person. The resulting uterine contractions, known as afterpains, can also be uncomfortable but might seem less intense compared to labor pains.
If you have any questions about fundal massage, postpartum hemorrhage, or other concerns related to your upcoming delivery, discuss them with your provider at your next prenatal visit.
